- Hope nobody minds me sending to the newsgroup - I've done so just in case
- there are flaws or better ways of doing what I have suggested..
-
-
- Hello Simon. Bad news indeed :( .
-
- Switching off DiskSalv half-way through a Fix-In-Place operation is a VERY
- VERY BAD idea :(( . You may have lost (atleast) some files...
-
- Try the LATEST version of DiskSalv, using the VALIDATE option rather than
- Recover - Recover is *much* more prone to crashing on the PD versions - could
- try the commercial version instead. Anyway, Recover is only for very badly
- trashed files - hopefully your DiskSalv antics (easy mistake to make, I've
- done it!) haven't necessitated this option.
-
- No backup? You have had you 1st (?) experience of why you should always do
- a backup... Even if it means 50-100 HighDensity floppies (twice that for
- `normal` DD ones), and a day spent, for a FULL backup (not incremental, as
- afterwards).
- I hope to get a Zip drive soon (internal SCSI) - heaven!
-
- I haven`t got the ideal solution, but this one should work IF you can do
- either of the following at *STEP 7* (check that!):
-
-
- 1.Get the *latest* PD version of DiskSalv (11.31 or 2.31 I think), or the
- commercial one for the best chance of recovery.
- 2.Set it up to SALVAGE.
- 3.With everything that's happened to your Hd, the `Best Guess` of the format
- (FFS, FFS-DC, etc..) may be incorrect - IF you know better, alter it (should
- be ok though).
- 4.Start it.
- 5.Output all the salvage information to a directory in the biggest space-free
- partition you have (try temporarily moving all files from there to any other
- place to free some space, if you can?).
- 6.When DiskSalv complains that the Disk is full, take not of the file it was
- LAST recovering. IF DOING OPTION (b), Pause DiskSalv when all salvaged files
- have taken up half the previously available space (incase compression does't
- reach 60+% FOR lzx)..
-
- 7.You now have two choices:
-
- (a) Use a backup program to backup all the data salvaged so far (minus the
- last file being salvaged), to floppies. I've done this with about 200+Mb of
- data of rare occasions - be prepared to spend an entire day :(( . Set it to
- highest compression, and use HighDensity disks if possible. Obviously you are
- going to need about 60-100 HD disks...... This will be the main problem with
- this option. I have used all the magazine floppies that I've collected over
- the (six:) years, but these are only Double/Low Density (same thing).
-
- (b) Compress all the files salvaged so far using LZX (not LhA if possible).
- LZX will give you *MUCH* better compression. The registered version of LZX
- should be a bit better. Latest version of LZX is v1.20, and I have found very
- stable. I can give you the settings you need to use with LZX if you want.
- Please note what you must do at step 6 for this option.
- LhA is slower & gives less good compression (no merging).
- With the output file, you must now back this up to floppies (no compression),
- unless you have enough space free on the Hd to finish the salvage.
-
- ******************
- 8.CHECK THE INTEGRITY OF THE BACKUP!!!! It is very possible for someone not
- used to backing up to have made a mistake someone.. An even some who is :)
-
- 9.Format the Hd with plain FFS (best for Hd use generally, and less to go
- wrong). ************Obviously I can`t be held responsible for any loss of
- data. Eg.if you can`t (fully) recover you data from the backup
- afterwards***********
- ******************
-
- 10.Spend ages restoring your backup.. (with option"(a)" is easy. Option "(b)"
- requires to restore from disk (if done to disk), then unarchive using "x"
- command).
-
-
- Again, I realise this is a very undesirable option both time & money (the
- disks!) wise, but it WILL work - the more space on the other partitions
- (uncorrupted), the better (easier & faster).
-
-
- Hopefully you can find a better solution :( . I might even suggest that
- since you NEED (everyone must!) to backup, you could buy a tapestreamer or Zip
- drive (or another Hd?) NOW - and use that rather than floppies for backing up.
- You certainly SHOULD be getting something like that in the future IF you
- can`t stand doing Floppy backups (incremental may only need a few disks).
-
-
- I can understand you predicament since I accidently used a util that erased
- the index on my (now unused) 210Mb overdrive Hd..... Thankfully DiskSalv
- saved me. I nearly died when I saw 100% free... <gulp>
-
- Better finish this now or I'll get the record longest reply on a newsgroup (?)
- - even if it is to find out if anyone things my suggestion(s) are flawed...
